Chronic sinusitis is persistent inflammation of the sinuses, which may make you feel like you have a cold that never goes away.
Air-filled cavities in the bones surrounding the nose and eyes, the sinuses work together to warm or cool inhaled air, humidify it and remove dust and allergens.
And while medications such as nasal sprays, antibiotics and antihistamines can provide temporary relief, many times they do not solve the problem and a surgical procedure may be required.
With chronic sinusitis, you may have 1 or more of the following symptoms for 3 months or longer:
Congestion
Facial pain or pressure
Decreased sense of smell
Persistent post-nasal drip
Headache
Your doctor will evaluate your symptoms and determine what’s the best treatment option for you, based on how severe your symptoms are. He or she may prescribe:
Antihistamines
Nasal corticosteroids
Nasal sprays or solutions
Oral or injected corticosteroids
Antibiotics
While sinus surgery provides relief for some patients, others can experience inflammation that closes off nasal passages and prevents them from getting the full benefit.
